I just heard the new version of the old Dead Kennedys song “California Uber Alles”. It’s by Jello who guest sings for the Melvins and is on the album “Sieg Howdy“.

If you’re not familiar with the song, the general theme is that the governor of California has aspirations of taking the presidency and turning it into a dictatorship. With the song title being German of course subtly inserts the idea of Nazism to the theme.

What’s interesting with “now” of course is the current governor. In case you’ve been hiding under a rock ever since the turn of the century, the current governor of California is of course Arnold Schwarzenegger who is Austrian. Some people argue that the Austrian folks are really all just Germans. I’m not so sure I would agree with that, but I’m a lover not a fighter so I stay out of it. So with Schwarzenegger having whatever conenction to Germany he has, of course plays right into Jello’s hands.

Jello delivers. He has updated the song to poke fun at Schwarzenegger and fun it is.

Urgh! A Music War is a British film released in 1981 featuring performances of punk and New Wave music, filmed in 1980. Among the artists featured in the movie are The Go-Go’s, The Fleshtones, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, XTC, Devo, Oingo Boingo, Gary Numan, Klaus Nomi, Wall of Voodoo and The Police. These are many of the most popular groups on the new wave scene; in keeping with the spirit of the scene, the film also features several less famous acts, and one completely obscure group, Invisible Sex, in what appears to be their single public outing.

If you think that lineup sounds like the cats meow,, then take a look at the whole thing….

I think I wore out the fast forward button on the remote going back and forth between the Wall of Voodoo clip and the Dead Kennedys clip. I saw the soundtrack once or twice on vinyl. I could swear I remember seeing it on CD as well, but well….beer will do that to you sometimes. Been drunk before? I have….
