Who remembers this one?

Or I guess, the better question is “Who remembers this one fondly”?

I think secretly a lot more people actually liked this song than would like to to admit it. It just seemed to be a popular song to a lot of the type of people we all….um…didin’t like to hang out with…

Some band called the repomen

I can’t really remember what I put in for the Flickr photos that show up in the sidebar and yes I am way too lazy to look it up. But, it looks like there’s some band named the “Repomen”. Check it out here.

Wil Wheaton, big Damned fan

By that I mean he’s a fan of our beloved band The Damned.

One his blog, he posted a list of songs that played on his iPod.

This afternoon, while I drove around town doing some errands, the following songs came up in the following order:

Tool – Stinkfist
REM – Driver8
The Damned – New Rose
Charlie Parker – Relaxin’ with Lee
Wilco – Summerteeth
Joy Division – Atmosphere

It’s like it was reading my mind, man.

If it was “reading his mind”, then he must be a fan. You’ll note some other favs our “ours” on there too.

Playing right into Jello’s hands

I just heard the new version of the old Dead Kennedys song “California Uber Alles”. It’s by Jello who guest sings for the Melvins and is on the album “Sieg Howdy“.

If you’re not familiar with the song, the general theme is that the governor of California has aspirations of taking the presidency and turning it into a dictatorship. With the song title being German of course subtly inserts the idea of Nazism to the theme.

What’s interesting with “now” of course is the current governor. In case you’ve been hiding under a rock ever since the turn of the century, the current governor of California is of course Arnold Schwarzenegger who is Austrian. Some people argue that the Austrian folks are really all just Germans. I’m not so sure I would agree with that, but I’m a lover not a fighter so I stay out of it. So with Schwarzenegger having whatever conenction to Germany he has, of course plays right into Jello’s hands.

Jello delivers. He has updated the song to poke fun at Schwarzenegger and fun it is.

Urgh! A Music War

I can remember well saying up late on a school to watch Urgh! A Music War. It was awesome. I was barely awake. I think I even failed an algebra test over it. I eventually got it on tape.

Urgh! A Music War is a British film released in 1981 featuring performances of punk and New Wave music, filmed in 1980. Among the artists featured in the movie are The Go-Go’s, The Fleshtones, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, XTC, Devo, Oingo Boingo, Gary Numan, Klaus Nomi, Wall of Voodoo and The Police. These are many of the most popular groups on the new wave scene; in keeping with the spirit of the scene, the film also features several less famous acts, and one completely obscure group, Invisible Sex, in what appears to be their single public outing.

If you think that lineup sounds like the cats meow,, then take a look at the whole thing….

  1. Opening credits
  2. The Police – “Driven to Tears”
  3. Wall of Voodoo – “Back in Flesh”
  4. Toyah Willcox – “Danced”
  5. John Cooper Clarke – “Health Fanatic”
  6. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – “Enola Gay”
  7. Chelsea – “I’m on Fire”
  8. Oingo Boingo – “Ain’t This the Life”
  9. Echo & the Bunnymen – “The Puppet”
  10. Jools Holland – “Foolish I Know”
  11. XTC – “Respectable Street”
  12. Klaus Nomi – “Total Eclipse”
  13. Athletico Spizz 80 – “Where’s Captain Kirk?”
  14. The Go-Go’s – “We Got the Beat”
  15. Dead Kennedys – “Bleed for Me”
  16. Steel Pulse – “Ku Klux Klan”
  17. Gary Numan – “Down in the Park”
  18. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts – “Bad Reputation”
  19. Magazine – “Model Worker”
  20. Surf Punks – “My Beach”
  21. The Members – “Offshore Banking Business”
  22. Au Pairs – “Come Again”
  23. The Cramps – “Tear It Up”
  24. Invisible Sex – “Valium”
  25. Pere Ubu – “Birdies”
  26. Devo – “Uncontrollable Urge”
  27. The Alley Cats – “Nothing Means Nothing Anymore”
  28. John Otway – “Cheryl’s Going Home”
  29. Gang of Four – “He’d Send in the Army”
  30. 999 – “Homicide”
  31. The Fleshtones – “Shadowline”
  32. X – “Beyond and Back”
  33. Skafish – “Sign of the Cross”
  34. Splodgenessabounds – “Two Little Boys
  35. UB40 – “Madame Medusa”
  36. The Police – “Roxanne
  37. The Police – “So Lonely”

I think I wore out the fast forward button on the remote going back and forth between the Wall of Voodoo clip and the Dead Kennedys clip. I saw the soundtrack once or twice on vinyl. I could swear I remember seeing it on CD as well, but well….beer will do that to you sometimes. Been drunk before? I have….

Here’s a news story that ran on WMC in Memphis back in ’92. It’s all about the alternative side of Memphis at the time.

I wonder where some of these people are now, especially John Gintz since he seemed so concerned with everyone else’s future…..

Floating head Dave Vanian

I’ve only seen this video once before on some video compilation tape at Mongos back in the day. Now it’s here. This is the video for “Smash It Up” by The Damned. Note the white background and the white turtleneck Dave is wearing makes it look like he’s a floating head. It’s an awesome effect.

This is really kind of…UM…weird. We all know and love Mr. T for the A-Team, for Rocky 3 and for the Eddie Murphy jokes. But now we can love him because he loves his mother. I personally don’t remember this, but it looks like it was part of one of those after-school specials or something…

About

Do you remember the days at Ridgeway high school, the Saturday nights at the plaza and the shows at the Antenna? We do. We were friends. We were enemies. Now it's twenty years later and we're grown up. But we haven't forgotten how much fun we had back then.
